Cosplay: Mirai Yashima (Part 5)

The evils of eyes and hooks; sleeves and cuffs; bias tape ranks tutorial; and the belt!

STEP 9: Eyes and Hooks

Pinning eyes in is a bitch.

They go straight through.

Sewing them in is a bitch too.

Pinning the hook on the other side. The top one can be pinned like normal.

STEP 10: Sleeves

I blanket stitched the raw edge of the shoulders together.

Pinning the sleeve.

Sewing the cuff.

Sewing the cuff into the sleeve.

STEP 11: Bias Tape for the Ranks

I did a mini tutorial for this, as bias tape is my specialty.

For doing ranks and such, it's easier to use single fold bias tape as opposed to double fold, which is best for trim around the edges.

Measure about an inch more than what you need so that you'll have about half an inch extra on each end.

To make stripes, line up the folds (ditches) of both colors back to back.

Then sew in the ditch.

Like so.

When you fold it back, it will look like this.

Repeat if you have another color or more stripes.

Ta da!

Use an invisible slip stitch to sew it on the costume. You can also sew in the ditch depending on the angle in which you putting the bias tape. Sometimes it's too hard to get to the ditch.

Ta da!

STEP 12: The Belt

The EFSF belt is quite different from the other belts I have had to make, where I just had to wrap fabric over elastic and put in a buckle.

Making a pattern, LOL. I have all this little pieces of paper for writing notes, and I often piece them together for patterns.

The vinyl.

The vinyl has been cut in the appropriate shape.

I forgot to take photos of putting in the velcro, but I but velcro in the back to close it.

Making a pattern for the yellow piece in the middle.

The yellow pieces are made from craft form. This is my first time using craft foam

I forgot to take photos again, this time of the pattern making for the "little houses" that go on the sides. I glued down the square piece that would make bottom of the houses, along with the middle piece of the belt on the vinyl and sat books on top to make sure that was glued down. Then I built the little houses on top of the squares.

Waiting for the pieces to dry.

The little houses

Love,
Mirai ^_~
